Phe's notes
This Low Fat Post Training Refuel Smoothie is designed to support the body in the critical recovery window after exercise, when muscles are primed to take up carbohydrates and protein and begin repairing and rebuilding.
The focus is on rapid glycogen replenishment, muscle protein synthesis, and calming the stress response that training creates. Its carb-dominant, low-fat profile allows the smoothie to empty from the stomach quickly, delivering nutrients to working muscles without sitting heavily in the gut or interfering with digestion. This is especially important after hard training, when blood flow is still directed towards the muscles rather than the digestive system.
Carbohydrates from oats, dates and blueberries provide a blend of fast and slow-release glucose, helping to restore muscle glycogen, stabilise blood sugar, and support the normal drop in cortisol that signals the body to shift from “work” mode into “repair” mode. The protein blend of brown rice and hemp delivers a complete amino-acid profile, including the key building blocks needed to trigger muscle protein synthesis and support tissue repair.
Blueberries are included not just for flavour, but for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which help reduce exercise-induced muscle damage and support mitochondrial recovery. Fibre and fat are kept moderate to avoid slowing digestion, promoting faster nutrient delivery and minimising post-exercise bloating or reflux.
This makes the smoothie well suited to people who train hard, struggle with recovery, or are sensitive to heavier post-workout meals. It provides the energy and nutrients the body needs to rebuild, while remaining gentle on the gut and supportive of a stable nervous and immune response after exercise.
Histamine & recovery
This post-training smoothie is also designed to be low in histamine and supportive of recovery, which is particularly important after exercise, when mast cells and inflammatory pathways are naturally more active.
The base of the recipe — oat milk, oats, brown rice protein and hemp protein — consists of ingredients that are naturally low in histamine and unlikely to trigger histamine release. Frozen blueberries are especially helpful here, as their polyphenols help calm exercise-induced inflammation and mast cell activity, making them well suited to the post-workout window when tissues are repairing and immune signalling is heightened.
Dates are included to provide fast-acting carbohydrates for glycogen restoration. They are not high in histamine, although in some people their natural sugars can act as a mild histamine liberator. Many highly histamine-sensitive people tolerate them well in small amounts and when combined with fibre and protein, as they are here. If needed, the date can be replaced with a small amount of maple syrup or another low-histamine carbohydrate without changing the function of the recipe.
Overall, this smoothie is designed to refuel muscles, support recovery, and reduce inflammatory load, rather than add to it — making it a gentle, histamine-aware option for post-workout nutrition.
